Professional DJs in search of a next-generation DJ mixer with advanced processing and effects should check out the Pioneer DJ DJM-A9, a professional DJ mixer that builds upon the success of the DJM900NXS2 and is well suited for professional mobile DJs, nightclub installations, recording studios, and more. The A9 includes an updated audio engine with ESS Technology, 32-bit high-quality AD/DA converters to disperse clear and natural sound in the booth and on the dance floor. The mixer's familiar 4-channel layout and an integrated USB sound card supports up to 4 stereo channels, while the digital throughput also delivers a wide variety of DSP effects.
The mixer features Pioneer's Sound Color, Beat, and Frequency effects, and its horizontal X-Pad touchpad lets DJs manipulate and apply effects in real time. There are four inputs for turntables and four line-level inputs for digital decks. Additional features include: Pro DJ Link, four S/PDIF digital input connections, and one S/PDIF digital output connection. Connect two computers via the two top-mounted USB connections (USB-B and USB-C). Additionally, a Bluetooth input is available on every channel, allowing you to stream tracks from your favorite portable device while using all the mixer's features and effects. The Multi I/O section has an independent channel selector to allow the use of external effects separately from Beat FX, giving the DJM-A9 true send capabilities.
A new color display helps artists to understand the status of the selected effect quickly and accurately, and it features lighting that corresponds with the X-Pad's horizontal arrangement, enabling more intuitive control with a simple finger slide. Artists can use the X-Pad to change the Echo and Ping-Pong effects to create a unique analog tape-style sound. And, within the 14 total Beat FX, there are 3 new ones you can use to add extra variation to your performances:
- Mobius: changes the frequency of the oscillator to constantly rise or fall in time with the beat
- Triplet Filter: changes the cut-off frequency cyclically for the filter according to the beat (based on 3 beats)
- Triplet Roll: outputs the recorded sound repeatedly according to the specified beat fraction (based on 3 beats)
The DJM-A9’s microphone section provides more control and adds extra creativity for DJs. The phantom-powered input, a feature never seen before on a DJ mixer, means artists can connect a high-quality condenser mic directly to the DJM-A9. There are also 3 new microphone effects with a dedicated reverb effect:
- Echo: outputs a delayed sound several times while attenuating it to add an echo effect
- Pitch: changes the pitch of the microphone sound
- Megaphone: changes the microphone sound, so it sounds like you’re talking through a megaphone
It’s quick and easy to turn the mic input on or off with the brand-new Push To Talk button when you want to grab the mic and address the audience. The audio from the mic can be excluded from the recording output if you want, so you can MC for the live crowd but record your mix without vocals.
